m&m’s premiums

oh god, why do the americans get all the good candy? a work colleague just returned from the states and brought me the mocha and the mint chocolate ones. so very, incredibly tasty.

wine and fire

big weekend just gone – a friend came around with some nice cleanskin wines, some sublime triple brie cheese and a fire staff .. i’d never seen proper fire twirling before, and it’s very cool. the noise the fire staff makes is awesome! i’m going to go watch some more tomorrow night .. this playing with fire stuff is fun! :-D

much drinking and catching up followed, and i think i poured myself in to bed around 3. i woke up this morning feeling much worse for the wear, but we caught up again over a late breakfast at amici’s – which most of us couldn’t finish – after which i felt much better. unsure whether that was the food or the coffee at work. ;-)

haven’t done much for the rest of day – about all i’ve achieved is selling a few things on ebay and checking out a few places i could possibly stay at in new york at the end of the year .. and i thought london was expensive! :-(

in other news – i went up to brisbane to catch up with school people (grade 12 reunion) and a friend for his birthday last weekend. flight up was excellent, i was able to score an on-departure upgrade with points and spent most of the flight sampling a particularly nice shaw and smith sauvignon blanc. truly excellent service in QF J as per usual.

friday night post arrival was nothing special; drinks out in the valley and home to my parents place by 2. saturday day was spent over at my grandmothers place (she’s worked out how to use google news! i’m so impressed), then back home to get ready for the reunion and birthday party.

the reunion was .. interesting. it’s a surreal experience being snubbed by exactly the same people 11 years on; it seems no-one changes. still, i was able to catch up with some of the people i did get on with and hope to stay in touch with them. i made my excuses and left early – i had a birthday party to get to! mum drove me there, and we were met in the driveway by a very merry birthday boy + friend holding cocktails and glasses of wine for me. the night sort of went downhill from there.. ;-)

auckland, the aftermath

never did get to the zoo or anything exciting like that. after getting checked out of the hotel I called the shuttle company to come pick me up, which they were more than happy to do – if I didn’t mind being picked up at 3. Two hours not being enough time to do much of anything, I settled for a quick walk around town, down along the port section and back up queen street for some window shopping.

The trip out to the airport wasn’t too bad – picking a few people up meant that we took the “scenic route”. At the airport the ground staff wanted me to check my bag (it was slightly more than the allowed 7 kgs), but let me through with it anyway. Customs, duty free and through to the gate lounge with about 15 mins to spare before boarding – pretty good timing I thought!

Flight back was uneventful, which is to say good. Food was again excellent – Qantas have much to learn here. On arrival I was very glad they let me through without forcing me to check my bag – delays in the baggage system meant that people were kept waiting for quite some time. :(

Work drinks on Friday night just gone was certainly entertaining .. we started at work, where I mixed a bunch of cocktails and got everyone nicely boozed up. Given that I work with the people I do, it got out of hand rapidly. One person decided that Tequila and Midori was a good combination. His stomach disagreed with him later on. ;-) Later that evening, those of us still going all piled in to a taxi and went to a couple bars in town.

Details aren’t needed, but a corporate Amex got laid down and we were instructed to make the most of it .. things got a little messy. Fortunately I got off lightly .. feeling a bit seedy the following morning was all I had to cope with. There were a few staff who would have been more substantially worse off than that. ;-)

given it’s now 4 in the morning, I should probably sign off and go to bed.
